EGR valve.

My 1982 diesel has what looks like an EGR valve on the intake manifold. Has anyone removed one, and would it help or hinder the "performance"?

Those only came on Cali trucks. If your truck came from Cali it probably has one. Get rid of it. But to be safe, attach a picture of what you are referring to.

As far as I know, it's always lived in Tennessee.
It has a valve with a vacuume diaphram on the intake manifold, with a pipe that runs to the exhaust manifold.

Philosophically, I agree. But the "unhindered" version is the FEDERAL one. California required the hindrance (EGR valve).

So...is it as easy as unbolting and adding block off plates? What do you do with the vacuum hoses and such? I have a CA model. I like the idea of a little more power, anything will help

Yes spiderpop, "basically". I haven't dealt with the isuzu version but basically, the exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold should be going out the tailpipe ONLY for maximum power and least amount of "hinderance". That place gets blocked off right there. The other end of that tube usually ends up at the intake manifold and the intake manifold should get cleaned and blocked at that port(s) which eliminates the need for all that aparatus. As for vacuum lines, they can be minimized and blocked pertaining to anything no longer in use.
